A rare three-story plus basement historic brick home was remodeled to a more open plan with exposed brick and wood paneled walls. A central stair supported by a 4 story steel plate ribbon centralizes and anchors the circulation. A portion of the rear brick wall was removed for an expanded kitchen on the main level and an additional bedroom and bath in the basement. Three historically contributing structures on a double lot were renovated while maintaining the open spaces between them as a unique character of the old town’s relationships between the primary homes and sheds along the alley. This allowed an abundance of interior natural light, views and open space between the house and neighbors. To maintain the historic context, variances were granted for existing non-conforming heights and setbacks.
